Fanatic

Operation Put up the Fan Part 4 went very well last night! We have a fan (installed!). I slept wonderfully chilled! Ok so how did we finally get to this point? Well Uncle J suggested we get a medallion to cover up our cracked ceiling. As opposed to our other option which you can read about here (as well as Operations 1-3). So here is a quick rundown of how the final operation went down.

This is the cracked ceiling. Which may or may not look as scary to you. But it freaked me out. And the fact that Uncle J had to put screws into our ceiling to "hold it up" while he was putting in the new bracket was a little frightening.

So we stopped by Home Depot and found this guy for about $20.

I thought the white looked a little tacky, but no worries, there is nothing a can of Oil Rubbed Bronze (ORB) can't fix. Seriously my love for spray paint is a little ridiculous and this stuff is magic. When it says you can spray from any angle you legit can spray from any angle. I tested it.

After giving it a good coat hanging upside down of ORB our new medallion looked like this:

We picked this up Sunday night and I sprayed it right when we got home so it could have about 10 hours to cure before Uncle J was to be back at the house. The can says it cures in 30 minutes to touch and an hour and a half to handle so I figured 10 hours would be sufficient time to try and screw it into a ceiling.

Then came the moment of truth. In about 2.5 seconds Uncle J had the old bracket out (we are so taking it back - I really wouldn't suggest it, ever) and the new bracket in (he found it at a lock supply store for under $10). Then after a couple of mishaps with some wires and finding the right hardware in the giant box it came in we had the fan up! Then we thought it wasn't working. Before we put in all of the blades and globe light we wanted to make sure the wiring was working and that the motor would start. So here we are clicking away setting the fan to full blast but we can't hear a thing. We can hear the motor click to the next level, but no other sound. That's right, guys, we have the quietest fan known to human kind that we thought it was broken. We shined our flashlight into the slots of the motor and sure enough it was spinning like crazy. So finally we put on the blades and globe and the thing looks beautiful.

(Sorry for the poor pic quality, I just realized my iphone is covered in saw dust and my "real" camera has yet to be unpacked).

All in all we love the fan. We love the medallion (we even think it makes the fan look better). We love that my uncle knows how to do everything. We love ORB. We will be saving to get the ceiling redone, but hey we've been here 8 days, I think it can wait.
